  • Some 150 veterans crossed the Channel to Normandy to pay their respects on the 71st anniversary of D-Day
  • More than 156,000 Allied troops joined the operation in the decisive blow stuck against Nazi occupation in Europe
  • Memorials were held in the Normandy town of Bayeux, the first to be liberated following the landing on June 6 1944
  • Winston Churchill called the operation ‘undoubtedly the most complicated and difficult that has ever taken place’
